Visions & Values

Pentland Primary Values | Teamwork

At Pentland Primary School, we strive to create a highly functioning learning community that encourages, motivates and supports students to reach their full potential and build lifelong learning habits. We prioritize quality teaching and providing students with a wide range of educational opportunities, tailored to their individual needs and abilities. In addition, we value creating a caring and supportive environment, where children feel happy and engaged during their time at Pentland.

Pentland Primary School aims to provide students with a range of educational opportunities that enable them to reach their full potential and grow academically, socially and personally. Student Voice & Leadership

The key aspects of our Student Voice and Leadership program are the implementation and utilisation of student voice, agency and leadership. These aspects of our programs improve our students’ outcomes in relation to their sense of school pride, sense of belonging and their levels of engagement.

Student agency refers to the level of autonomy and power that a student experiences in the learning environment. Student voice and agency are intrinsically linked. Agency gives students the power to direct and take responsibility for their learning, creating independent and self-regulating learners.

Student leadership is not confined to a small group of individuals, as leadership potential is inherent within all learners. Student leaders have an increased sense of responsibility to help others and to model leadership principles and values. Trust, autonomy and relationships are enhanced through the development of leadership qualities.

At Pentland Primary School we offer a plethora of leadership opportunities for all students.

This may be through representing their class (Level Three to Level Six) as part of our Junior School Representative Council, or in a learning environment where the guided inquiry delivery of Integrated studies allows them to lead the direction of their learning and to collaborate effectively in teams.

In Level Five and Six, all of our students are part of the ‘Buddy Program’ where they demonstrate responsibility and caring in a supportive environment. Each year every student is allocated a Foundation ‘Buddy’ who they develop a caring relationship with over the year. Students meet regularly and the Buddy Program allows for collaborative activities that are led by the students. They assist the younger students in reading, numeracy and other activities.

At Pentland Primary School we have student leaders in the following areas:

School Captains, House captains (for Perkins, Newcombe, Fraser and Lewis) and Shadow House Captains.

Each of the roles carries a variety of responsibilities designed to promote the school values of teamwork, happiness, respect, trust, honesty, communication, learning, pride and persistence.

School Council

Pentland School Council has the important role of ensuring effective functioning of the school. Not only does it give parents an official voice on school matters, but it has joint responsibility for the development of educational policies, maintaining facilities and grounds, overseeing financial operations and ensuring a quality education for all of our students.

Pentland Primary School Council oversees the school within the guidelines set out by the Department of Education and consists of elected parents and community members, staff members and Principal. The roles of our School Council include:

  • Acting as a channel regarding whole school issues, policies and practices
  • Determining goals and priorities of the school within the framework of the school plan and state guidelines
  • Approving and monitoring the school budget and ensuring all monies are expended for proper purposes
  • Developing the student code of conduct and dress code
  • Overviewing the buildings and grounds and ensuring they are kept in safe working order
  • Reporting annually to the school community and the Department of Education
  • Generally stimulating interest in the school

What the School Council is not responsible for is the day to day operations of the school such as staffing arrangements, concerns relating to individual students, complaints about teachers or implementation of policies.

School council meetings are held in the staffroom. Elections are held each year and committee membership is open to all interested members of our school community.
